ABA house ok’s resolution urging breed neutral dog laws. Some pit bulls just don’t get any respect.
Resolution 100 before the ABA House of Delegates includes a report outlining the problem. Some local governments ban certain breeds, or add restrictions on their ownership, such as sterilization, microchipping and muzzling. Until February, when it repealed the law, Ohio also defined certain breeds of dogs—namely, pit bulls—as vicious. On Monday, the House approved the resolution, which calls for breed-neutral dangerous dog laws that focus on the behavior of the dog owners and their pets. According to the report accompanying the resolution, laws that target “pit bulls” are inconsistent with due process because it’s difficult to determine which dogs fit in the category. And even when laws are more specific in their definitions, it’s difficult to judge a dog from its appearance. Elise Van Kavage, chair of the Animal Law Committee of the Tort, Trial & Insurance Practice Section, spoke in favor of the resolution. “People love their pets, no matter what their appearance,” she said. “This is America. Responsible pet owners should be allowed to own whatever breed they want.”

What a great story for our loving Pit Bulls! Keep up the good work y’all.
- MEMPHIS, TN – (WMC-TV) – We have covered plenty of stories about pit bulls doing harm. And every time we report one those incidents we hear from responsible pit bull owners who say the breed is getting a bad rap. Now we are profiling two pit bulls who defy negative stereotypes, saving lives not threatening them. Bully does not mind going to the vet. His visits provide hope for other dogs who have no hope left. Bully, a 3-year-old pit bull is a blood donor.”We have dogs that come in all the time that for one reason or another have lost a significant amount of blood. They need blood transfusions,” Vet Tech and pit parent Amanda Smith said. Porsche, 12, was on the verge of dying of kidney disease until she was saved by Bully’s blood. “One bag could save four dogs,” Smith says. While Bully saved lives with his blood, Stormy saved lives with her bark. Seven years ago, the pit bull managed to get out of her kennel and awaken her owner, Kevin Cavanaugh, who was asleep inside his home as it went up in flames.”I said we’ve got to go so I ran down the hall and the blaze was so intense that Stormy turned back,” Cavanaugh said.Stormy hid under a bed while firefighters spent hours putting out the flames. The whole time, Cavanaugh worried his dog might not make it. He asked firefighters to search for her.”Two or three minutes later they came back out and she was slumped over his arm. The fireman said for whatever reason she has a faint breath,” Cavanaugh said.”They put the oxygen mask on her and revived her. She saved my life.” Seven years later, Cavanaugh still credits his pit bull for his survival. And dogs like this can give credit to Bully for giving them life. Click on link for video. Just got good news for our bullies! Governor Patrick signs into law making BSL illegal in the state of Massachusetts! Support your local BSL in your state and make this law apply to all!
- Boston, Mass., August 2, 2012
“No dog will be deemed dangerous based on breed of such dog.”
Governor Deval Patrick (D- Massachusetts) was supported by members of the MSPCA-Angel Advocacy team and others as he signed into law S.2192 “An Act Further Regulating Animal Control” yesterday at the Ashland Animal Control office. The new law will provide new protections for animals in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a state often leading the country in previous landmark legislation. In a statement released yesterday, Patrick said, “I am pleased to sign this legislation that strengthens and improves our animal control laws to better protect and care for our state’s homeless animals.”
Several animal protections measures are included in the law, such as:
- Improvements to the “dangerous dog law” which will make the law breed-neutral. (In other words, no Breed Specific Legislation in Massachusetts!)
- A state-wide homeless animal fund which is paid for by voluntary contributions from Massachusetts citizens via a voluntary tax check-off box on their tax returns. This money will fund spay and neuter surgeries in state animal shelters across the Commonwealth, significantly reducing the number of homeless pets in Massachusetts.
- Pets will be added to domestic abuse prevention orders (restraining orders), to protect both human and animal victims of domestic violence.
- “Gas chambers” and other inhumane methods of euthanasia will be prohibited at shelters that euthanize animals deemed “unadoptable” due to documented aggressiveness or serious illness.
- Mandatory training for animal control officers, including animal CPR, safe animal training and other key agendas.
- Add enforcement provisions to section 139A (the spay/neuter deposit law for animals adopted from shelters and animal control facilities) to ensure that these animals cannot reproduce.
PetSmart Charities is doing their part to stop overcrowding in animal shelters and the senseless killing of one of the most euthanized pets across the country. They have awarded $1 million in grants for a nationwide spay and neuter campaign for pit bulls. The campaign called “Primp Your Pit” is being offered during August at 63 non-profit spay and neuter clinics in 30 states. The goal is to sterilize 6,750 pit bulls during the month. The grant program, which hopes to reduce overcrowding in city animal shelters, offers spay and neuter surgeries for a special rate of $20, including a free nail trim. PetSmart Charities reports that 35 percent of dogs in U.S. households are not spayed or neutered. “Pit bulls, in particular, end up in shelters in large numbers due to the myths and negative media and public perceptions that are associated with the breed.” “Our national grant program gives much-needed help to pit bull terriers that are especially at risk,” said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities Inc. “Through the ‘Primp Your Pit’ promotion and our ongoing efforts to make affordable spay/neuter surgeries available to the public, pet parents can prevent unwanted litters and ensure their pet lives a long, happy life. Participating “Primp Your Pit” clinics are listed on the PetSmart Charities website.

The gridiron has had its fair share of dog related stories in the past few years, and not all of them taking a positive spin when it comes to man’s best friend. The speed and strength to be a pro bowl football player in the National Football League can only be measured on the field. The love, respect and dedication required to be a ambassador for the American Bully can only be determined by a owner of the breed. Mike Griffin has proved to be both, with his skills in the secondary the baller has been declared a pro bowler at his position. The same passion and dedication can be found when he is out and about with his dogs. Whether it’s the backyard, a pet store, or the Titans stadium Griffin is always representing for the breed. Want to know more about the “Big Dog” of the Tennessee Titans defense and his love for the American Bully, check out Issue 15 of Atomic Dog Magazine!
